Weekly Newsletter Grade 5
Dates:  October 29-November 2, 2018

Curriculum Information for the Week:

Literacy: We hear from many parents, how do I support my child in reading anything but fantasy? Well the next reading and writing units are a supportive step in that direction. From now until the winter break students will be immersed in the world of nonfiction (but still have that independent choice reading book!). In fifth grade we ask them to tackle a more complex text and look at how the content is organized, how to decode content specific words, and how to approach a text with multiple main ideas. Since reading and writing are heavily linked, we will also be asking kids to produce this type of writing aligned with our science unit on renewable energy.  As a parent you can support by talking about articles that you are reading, current events, or interesting non-fiction books that you have read (in any language!). Who knows, maybe they will set down Percy Jackson for a few minutes...by choice!

Math:  Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.

Unit of Study:  The students will  finish our learning on Types of Government, and reflect on the Melaka trip. We will also start our first science unit of the year, where students study energy sources and its properties as well as sustainable alternative energy sources.  They will also be participating  in a variety of lab experiences, looking at electrical circuits, energy consumption and conservation. You can support at home by engaging with your child’s home learning. There is always a component linked to our Unit of Study!

Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for the Week:

Digital Literacy:
It takes a team to support our students as they learn to be educated, digital citizens. We are lucky to have Mr. Steve Katz as a resource for us. It is also important that you are talking with your child (in any language!) at home about the choices they are making online (this includes ISKL email). This week we reviewed with fifth graders on three important topics…
How to keep your passwords private (ONLY share with parents and teachers).
What to do if you come across inappropriate content online.
ISKL email is for school-related items. Students should not be chatting with each other through ISKL email. If you or your child needs support with other online communication options, please talk with your child’s teacher.
Check out Common Sense Media for resources such as Here's the Secret to Raising a Safe, Smart Kid and other ways to support your 5th-grade digital citizen!

Literacy:

Friday 10 August 2018

Welcome!

Dear Parents,

Welcome to 5CC!  I am excited to get the year started as your child’s new teacher!
Last August I moved to Malaysia with my husband and our now 20 month old son, Bennett. Before living in Malaysia I spent 7 years at an international school in Monterrey, Mexico. In the early party of my teaching career, I was in Phoenix, Arizona and I grew up in Washington and Michigan.  This will be my 13th year teaching mostly 4th and 5th grade.
A little about the year to come:
The 5th grade team is ready for a great year.  Amy Schneider is our resource teacher and Andrea Bongarzone is our EAL support teacher they will be supporting in a variety of groupings as well as collaborating and co-teaching with teachers.  We have some great lessons, trips and activities ready, which you will find out about as we go through the year. I am eager to get started and share them all with you.

I am looking forward to getting to know the students and families here at ISKL.  Please feel free to share any news with me. I have attached a form to this letter that will allow me to get the ball rolling on getting to know students a bit better as well as their parents.  Please fill it out and return it to me. If there is anything else you wish to share that has not been asked, please write it on the back of the paper or send me an email.

School communication will happen through ISKL email and class blog (https://5cciskl.blogspot.my/). The class blog will have all grade level and class information, including photos and a weekly newsletter. Please make sure you check these on a regular basis. There is an option to follow the blog by email (see “follow by email” on the right side of the blog).  If you wish to contact me or schedule a time to meet at any point in the year, my email is cchavez@iskl.edu.my

I look forward to collaborating with you, getting to know your children and having a great year!

Literacy & Unit of Study: This week (like last week) is Blackboard mania. The end is in sight, as the first share is on Wednesday for the 4th graders and the parents are coming in to see them on Thursday at 2:00. We hope every parent is able to make it. They are looking fabulous and the students have worked VERY HARD.

Math: Students are now doing their final math unit of the semester on 2D Figures. They are reviewing the properties of polygons and will use this knowledge to help categorise them.
