Dear Parents,

Curriculum Information for this Week:

Literacy: Grade 5 students continue to work on their fantasy stories. This week we focus on
making our stories believable by adding details to our settings, internal and external character
traits and making sure to show not tell throughout our stories.   Fantasy book clubs continue as
students analyze their books through the focus on metaphors, symbolism and thinking about
how fantasy helps us understand the real world.

Math: The students continued working on Unit 5: Multiplying & Dividing Fractions’. They are
using a variety of manipulatives and also drawing models to show their thinking. The students
will begin to dig deeper into dividing fractions.

Unit of Study:  Students will investigate and research a question regarding at least two body
systems and how they work together. After they have made a plan they will start to put together
a model of the systems to show how they interact. This week students will begin to visit the
maker’s space to build their body systems.

Weekly Newsletter Grade 5
Dates: Feb 5 - Feb. 9 2018

LOGO FULL COLOR.pngDear Parents,

Curriculum Information for this Week:

Literacy: Grade 5 students are beginning to write their fantasy stories. They are taking all
their great ideas and choosing the best one to write a story. Some elements of fantasy they
may include are a quest, magical creatures, underdog characters, or a magical setting. Here
are some questions you can ask your son or daughter about their story: What is the theme of
your story? Describe the setting of your story. Is there a quest in your story? Are you thinking
about a happy ending or something surprising? Is your main character an underdog? What
fantasy elements are you including in your story?

Math: This week we will be reviewing adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals. Students will have a chance to show what they know on an assessment. We will begin to explore multiplying and dividing fractions next using a variety of manipulatives to show their thinking.

Unit of Study: Students have finished their human body rotations. Ask them what their favorite
system to study was and what they know about it. We are heading towards the yearly favorite,
the chicken leg dissection. It’s a fun day for all the students. More details to follow.
